Life got in the way a bit last week but I'm trying to get back on track now. 1,300 words today.
I know! How dare it. it wasn't all bad though. I went down to London to see Wolf Hall which was amazing and then I have been visiting English departments of Universities with my eldest which isn't exactly painful either!

I'm just doing a bit each day so that it becomes a habit rather than doing it in fits and starts. Some days are better than others but it's still writing every day, isn't it?

Went to see Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche speak in Ilkley last night. What an interesting woman. What a fabulous writer!
Here are my thoughts.

I can't believe she came to Ilkley! What a coup! Still, so did Maya Angelou. Maybe it's the moors that pull them in!
Keep writing — write 1x every day
Having to get up very early this week to keep going as it's half term and there's no time in the day!

I took up Bec's writing challenge. Here's my attempt at incorporating all those tricky words!

I have archived previous goals as I have a tidy mind and I am about to start on my new novel so I'm clearing the virtual decks before I begin.
Great work - review your progress — write 4x every week
Yesterday I went to an evening at Ilkley Playhouse where people could send in their short scripts and then they would be performed (after rehearsed reading) by members of the playhouse. It was great and next time I might even submit one of my mine.
Oh you must submit something. Imagine how great it would be to hear your words read by a professional actor.
Closer to that goal — write 4x every week
Today I have been writing about two characters who will eventually meet. I then had to splice the stories together to make one. It was fun and I quite like them - one a trussed up, fussy single man who likes everything just so and the other an airy fairy teenage girl who forgets to put the family bin out and so puts all their rubbish into his. I wonder if I can fit them into something else?

Today I worked on finishing a stage play for my degree. It is ready to go but I can't seem to get my hand to press send. Deadline is tomorrow. I will send it today!
Did you send it? Though you hesitated I bet it felt amazing when it had gone. Hurrah!
I did send it. Brave huh?! I wouldn't mind but I hadn't made any changes for days. Just a coward, I guess!
Created a new goal — write 4x every week
I made a New Year's resolution to write a real letter, on paper with a stamp and everything, to one friend a week throughout 2014. Today I wrote letter number two. Letter writing seems to be something that I have forgotten how to do although I think this week's letter was better then last. Perhaps by the time we get to December my letters will be works of genius!
Created a new dream — I want to be published before I am 50.
I sent my YA manuscript out. It got a couple of rejections but after what felt like an eternity, an agent contacted me and asked to see the whole thing. Still waiting to hear......
Great progress — I need to edit my manuscript so that it is ready to send out.
Created a new goal — I need to edit my manuscript so that it is ready to send out.
I have the completed first draft of a novel. It is around 75,000 words but it needs a serious edit. The plot is OK I think but I have learned a lot since I wrote it and I need to make it as good as I can.
In August, I hit upon the idea of posting it on a blog a chapter at a time and asking my friends for feedback, good and bad. It has had just over 4,000 hits and I think about 50 people are still reading it week by week. I have four more chapters to publish and then it will be finished. I then plan to survey monkey people to see what they think. Depending on that feedback I will then use the feedback to produce a second draft. I hate editing and if I'm not careful I will focus my attention on my current project and it will get overlooked. If I keep everything at first draft stage then I'll never get anywhere!
Imogen - I love the idea of posting a novel chapter by chapter. I've been talking to a guy who is working on a project to have an online 'serials' website so authors can do just that. Check out his kickstarter campaign - you don't have to donate but you can read all about it. http://www.kickstarter.com/…
I'll have a look. My experiment has been more about getting feedback to see if I'm any good rather than selling the finished article. It has been absolutely terrifying and some of my critics haven't pulled their punches but I think I've learned loads. I will start draft two as soon as I get the last couple of chapters out. I told my husband that I was the modern day Dickens! He just laughed!!
