I really re-worked this story for reading aloud. The original story, written for print, had first person narration with a male narrator so I changed it to third person. I read it over several times to remove stumbling points with awkward or excessive words. It was a small cafe venue with no acoustic problems, no mic needed, so I just had to read with a reasonably audible voice. It flowed well, I thought, and held the audience's attention (I hope). I hadn't done spoken word evenings before, so this was a new and enjoyable experience.
Then I read this: http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/… :-)
